The City of Watertown’s Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department invites residents to celebrate Arbor Day by participating in the Right Tree, Right Spot program, an initiative focused on educating the public about proper tree selection and planting practices — and giving away trees to help residents get started.
City Forester Ryan Thurow emphasized the program’s core message: “Choosing the right tree for the right spot is one of the most important steps toward creating a healthy, lasting landscape. Our goal is to teach residents how to plant trees that will thrive — not just survive.”
The program features a virtual tree planting workshop that covers key topics including tree species selection, planting techniques, Digger’s Hotline procedures, and long-term tree care. Residents must watch the video — which will be sent by email after registration — in order to be eligible for a free tree.
A total of 100 trees were purchased from McKay Nursery and Johnson’s Nursery for distribution. Tree pickup will take place at the Park Shop on Hiawatha Street (located between Kwik Trip West and the Railroad) on the following dates:
April 24 | 5:00 – 6:00 PM
May 1 | 4:00 – 5:00 PM
May 8 | 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Trees are available first-come, first-served, one per household, and only for Watertown residents. Available Tree Species Include Norway Spruce, Techny Arborvitae, Redbud, Pagoda Dogwood, and more. No warranty is provided on the free trees.
